The Flavors of the Diaspora – The Life and Work of Claudia Roden
In the exploration and promotion of Mediterranean culinary culture, both journalism and more
recent scholarly approaches generally accord primary importance to Claudia Roden's work. However,
her life story could also serve as a case study of the expulsion of the over 850,000-strong Middle
Eastern Jewish diaspora in 1948, which, over the past 75 years, has not received adequate scholarly
attention. This study examines the historical context and major events of Claudia Roden's life and
ultimately highlights some of the particularly inspiring cultural aspects of her work, which could
provide valuable insights for further research considerations.
