Tanulmányunk a Magyar Zsidó Múzeum állandó kiállításának egy – korábban ismeretlen – tárgyát, a Megillat Horthyt mutatja be. A tekercs héber nyelvű szövege a numerus clausustól a zsidótörvényeken, munkaszolgálaton át a deportálásokig és a főváros zsidó lakóinak üldözéséig foglalja össze a magyarországi zsidóság tragédiáját, a háború utáni újrakezdés fájdalmas és óvatos bizakodásával végződik. Bár a szöveg keletkezésének még több részlete tisztázásra vár, az bizonyos, hogy 1956 kora őszén készült a párizsi Ismeretlen Zsidó Mártír Síremlék részére, ott – a többi túlélő közösség megillája között – Magyarországot, a magyarországi zsidóság „szenvedés történetét” volt hivatva reprezentálni. Ez a szerep különös jelentőséget ad a szövegnek, melynek magyar fordítását az ELTE Hebraisztika szakán tanuló hallgatók közreműködésével adjuk közre.

The study is dealing with a formerly unknown object of the permanent exhibition of the Hungarian Jewish Museum, the so called Megillat Horthy. The Hebrew text of the roll is a summary of the tragedy of Hungarian Jewish people, including numerus clausus, Anti-Jewish Laws, forced labor, deportation, and the persecution of the Jewish citizens in Budapest, finished with the painful and cautious hope of the post-war period’s fresh start. Although certain details of the text’s formation still need to be clarified, one thing is clear, that it was made in early fall of 1956 for the Memorial of the Unknown Jewish Martyr in Paris, where – among the megillahs of the different surviving communities – it was meant to represent Hungary, the history of the sufferings of Hungarian Jewish people. The text has an outstanding importance as a result of this role, its Hungarian translation is published here with the cooperation of the students of the Department of Hebrew Studies, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest.
